The Association

The "Association for Immunotherapy of Cancer" was founded in fall 2002 as an information and education platform for immunological cancer therapy. Physicians and researchers from different fields of clinical and theoretical medicine from the universities of Berlin, Erlangen, Mainz and Tübingen are the initiators of the association. A schematic overview of the organization, targets and the Association's network with other related activities is illustrated below:

Targets

The target of the Association for Immunotherapy of Cancer is to establish an information and education network by three complementary measures:
  1. By the creation of a web database "Clinical Trials", for physicians and interestedpublic. This site will provide the following information for both groups of interest:
    • a comprehensive overview of the targets and specific characteristics of the clinical cancer immunotherapy trials running in Germany and in other European countries

    • support establishing contact with the respective investigators of clinical trials.
  2. By holding annual meetings on interdisciplinary cancer immunotherapy. These meetings should present an update on the basics and clinical application aspects of immunological cancer therapies at least once a year.

  3. By organizing interdisciplinary postgraduate courses for physicians and scientists in laboratories and hospitals with special attention to the regulatory aspects of immune cancer therapy trials. During the course of the training program the participants will participate in theoretical and practical training according to a structured curriculum at each of the four university locations.

Network

The Association for Immunotherapy of Cancer's network is established in different fields of medical activity, thus it tends automatically to become an interdisciplinary co-operation. The interdisciplinary tendency of the association is also supported by the structure of its scientific advisory board where the following professional groups are represented:

  1. German Society of Immunology (Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Immunologie, DGfI) represented by Prof. Blankenstein, Berlin

  2. German Society of Hematology and Oncology (Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Hämatologie und Onkologie) represented by Prof. Dörken, Berlin

  3. German Society of Gynecology (Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gynäkologie) represented by Prof. Wagner, Marburg

  4. Work group for internal Oncology (Die AG für Internistische Onkologie) represented by Prof. Keilholz, Berlin

  5. Work Group for Oncology of the German Society for Digestional and Metabolical Diseases (Die AG für Onkologie der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Verdauungs- und Stoffwechsel-krankheiten) represented by Prof. Schmiegel, Bochum

  6. German Society of Dermatology (Die Deutsche Dermatologische Gesellschaft) represented by Prof. Sterry, Berlin

  7. German Society of Urology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Urologie) represented by Prof. Jocham, Lübeck.
The Association for Immunotherapy of Cancer's activitiy is to be coordinated with national and/or European efforts already existing or under construction. The following figure shows the interdisciplinary competence and research networks that represent the operational basis of the association. The national authority network "antigen-specific tumor therapy" intents to define standard procedures to be used within the scope of cancer vaccination, provide the infrastructure for the production of cancer vaccines according to GMP-standards, as well as establish and coordinate the setup and cooperation of scientific projects and research groups working in this field.
