Welcoming Address
Dear Colleagues,
The scientific and technological basis of antigen-specific immunotherapy of tumor diseases has been broadened significantly within the last few years, and the successful clinical application has become reality. Recently, monoclonal antibody therapy has become a part of the standard procedure in fighting certain malignant diseases. A large number of new antibodies against surface molecules of different functions are being developed or soon to be licensed.
During the past decade, substantial progress for the therapeutic application of the cellular arm of the immune response has been achieved, especially by the identification of a growing variety of target-antigens and the extended knowledge about the generation of T cell epitopes, the induction of T Cell responses and mechanisms of tolerance. These findings have been transferred into therapeutic vaccination trials in malignant diseases, and although the results were encouraging, at the same time they raise a number of problems to be solved.
To overcome future obstacles and to establish antigen-specific immunotherapy as a lasting column of multi-modal cancer therapy, a better interaction and complementary project design is necessary. To achieve this target, four academic institutions (Berlin, Erlangen, Mainz and Tübingen) have recently founded the Association for Immunotherapy of Cancer. Clinically oriented scientists and basic research scientists are members of this association. Its targets are the creation of a web portal with up-to-date information about cancer immunotherapy trials, the organization of postgraduate courses, and the realization of annual meetings on the immunotherapy of cancer.
The first of those meetings, to which we sincerely invite you, is taking place in Mainz on May 8th and 9th, 2003. You will have the opportunity to meet leading scientists in the primary fields of antigen-specific immunotherapy, and discuss their work and further development in this fascinating field. In addition to the main lectures, poster presentations and short presentations will help to establish contacts. We are looking forward to a productive and stimulating meeting with you in Mainz.
