Welcoming Address

Dear Colleagues,

it is almost two years since representatives of the Universities in Berlin, Erlangen, Mainz and Tübingen founded an interdisciplinary consortium on Cancer Immunotherapy (http://www.c-imt.org). They were supported by an interdisciplinary Advisory Board composed of representatives from six scientific societies. In order to broaden and consolidate the scientific and technological basis of antigen-specific tumor immunotherapy and to establish it as an integral constituent of multi-modal cancer therapy, the consortium addresses basic research, clinically oriented scientists as well as biotech and pharmaceutical companies. Included in its goals are the provision of up-to-date information on immunotherapy trials, organization of postgraduate courses and the holding of annual symposia on cancer immunotherapy.

The 2nd CIMT symposium will once again be held in central Germany at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Mainz, on May 6-7, 2004. It will be divided into four consecutive workshops dedicated to antibody therapy, therapeutic vaccination, adoptive T cell transfer and immune escape mechanisms. Two chairpersons for each of the workshops were formally elected by members of the consortium and the interdisciplinary advisory board. The emphasis of the workshops will be on outlining the current status of the respective field, addressing burning questions and discussing their implementation in the current design of experimental and clinical studies. Aside from plenary talks to be held by invited speakers, workshops will mainly be conducted in the form of short presentations on ongoing clinical and pre-clinical studies selected from submitted abstracts. We intend to publish accepted abstracts in "Cancer Cell International (CCI)", a BioMedCentral online journal.

Aside from the opportunity to meet renowned international scientists working in the primary fields of antigen-specific immunotherapy, participants will be able to take advantage of making personal contact with leaders of ongoing pre-clinical and clinical projects. In order to facilitate communication the number of participants is restricted to 250.

We hope very much that you will be able to participate in this symposium and are looking forward to a productive and stimulating meeting with you in Mainz.
